2005 Alabama Annual Retreat

Camp Sumatanga -- Oct 28-30, 2005

The Sierra Club Alabama Chapter Annual Retreat was held at Camp Sumatanga in Gallant, Alabama, October 28-30, 2005. Sumatanga is nestled beneath the Chandler Mountain Range in St. Clair County. There are walking trails that range from easy walking to strenuous - many of them beside the beautiful lake at the foot of the mountain.

The retreat theme was Cherishing the Environment Starts at Home. Motivational workshops, outings in beautiful mountainous settings, and a delicious local foods dinner were enjoyed by participants. A hayride and bonfire (with s'mores, of course!) and a Halloween party were also held.

Speakers included:

John Randolph, author of The Battle for Alabama Wilderness:
Saving the Great Gymnasiums of Nature
Dr. Woody Fritz, Birmingham wellness physician
Ron Sparks, Alabama Agriculture Commissioner
Dr. Larry Brasher, Birmingham local conservationist and historian
Jim Price, Sierra Club Senior Regional Conservation Director
Maura Wood, Sierra Club Senior Regional Representative
